Shadow
Paperhouse Studio worked one-on-one with Angela Blumberg to create a kozo fibre mask for a performance that would evoke the appearance of a shadow by obscuring the eyes of the dancer, while also remaining practical to perform in.
“Shadow lightheartedly depicts the battle between a woman and her unconscious. Originally, the piece was a solo that I had choreographed for Carmen and it was performed at the Toronto Heliconian Club in 2013. After that initial performance, I decided to explore the piece further as a duet. I changed it radically but kept the original props: 4 chairs that shaped the movement language. Departing from this first version, Augusto and I spun a story around the confrontation between the character and her unconscious; to reinforce the story-telling we invited illustrator Luisa Stenzel and Paperhouse Studio to collaborate on the project.”
